Ocmulgee National Monument

Ocmulgee National Monument is home to one of the most significant archaeological sites in the eastern United States, and a place where history continues to unfold. Another major feature of the park's significance lies in its location along the Ocmulgee River, which once served as a trade route for Native Americans. This region is renowned for its abundant migratory flyway and wildlife habitat - especially home to an abundant population of Ocmulgee River Black Bears. Recent surveys of the region's tourism industry indicate that designation as a national park could boost visitors to Macon by six times over the next fifteen years, generating an estimated $200 million annual economic impact for middle Georgia.

However, the campaign to make Ocmulgee a National Park and Preserve has encountered obstacles. For one thing, the NPS has been conducting studies to assess if the park's natural and cultural resources merit designation. If the studies prove positive, then the NPS can begin drawing a final park boundary. Congress ultimately has the final say on this matter and will ultimately make its decision regarding its fate. Seth Clark, the mayor of Macon, has spearheaded efforts to bring this historic land into the national spotlight.
