Marietta National Cemetery
Marietta National Cemetery is a 23-acre historic site within Marietta's city
limits that serves as the final resting place of over 17,300 men who perished
during the Civil War. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it
was one of the first Civil War Era National Cemeteries to be established. Henry
Cole, a local merchant who supported the Union throughout the war, established
this cemetery in 1866. His goal was for both Union and Confederate soldiers to
be interred here so that the town could move toward peace.
Marietta was one of many towns that suffered heavy fighting during the Civil
War. It was also the site of several battles, such as the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain where Union troops defended Marietta against
Confederate Army attacks. Following the war, Henry Cole donated 24 acres to be
used as a national cemetery. It was designed by Union Army Chaplain Thomas B.
Van Horne and is considered one of the most ornate and elaborate cemeteries of
its era.
There are 21 burial sections organized in crescents, circles, ovals, and
shield shapes with concentric rows of graves within each one. The undulating
terrain rises from the main entrance at the northwest corner to a central hill
that offers breathtaking views of Kennesaw Mountain and Atlanta. Marietta

who served during the Civil War. As I strolled its grounds, I was profoundly
moved by each gravestone's symmetry against the backdrop of rolling hills - it
truly was a humbling experience.
Marietta Lyric Theatre
For over a century, Marietta Lyric Theatre was an integral part of city
culture and entertainment for both locals and visitors to Marietta.
Unfortunately, due to a sharp drop in attendance due to the pandemic outbreak,
it closed its doors in March 2023. Three Oklahoma Governor's Arts Awards and
the national Helen Hayes Award have been won by its leadership, who also tours
across Oklahoma with high-caliber professional musical theater productions. As
Atlanta's only professional musical theater company, it has fostered some of
Atlanta's finest talent. In the 1920s and '30s, The Lyric Theatre hosted some of
Broadway's top shows such as For Goodness Sake (music by Cole Porter), Fifty Million
Frenchmen (music by George Gershwin), and The Cocoanuts (book by George S.
Kaufman).
In its later years, the Lyric Theatre became known as Savoyards Light Opera
and specialized in Gilbert and Sullivan productions; however, later productions
also featured musical theatre. The Lyric Theatre was recreated from remnants of
both the Apollo Theatre and the original Lyric Theatre, boasting a grand
auditorium, stage house, and lobby with an arched facade on 43rd Street as well
as smaller ones on 42nd Street. Tickets range in price from $25 to $60 and the

The Lyric has been drawing in Broadway stars who have gone on to achieve great
success. Unfortunately, attendance has been declining steadily for several

Marietta Museum of History

Americans, the Civil War, and everyday life in the 19th century. The museum is
