AWARE Wildlife Rescue Center in Georgia is a non-profit organization that cares for sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife while also educating people about wildlife's relationships with humans. Located just east of Atlanta, AWARE Wildlife Rescue Center accepts up to 2,000 wild animals every year for rehabilitation and education purposes. Their specialty lies in native Georgia wild animal rehabilitation - and is Georgia's sole licensed wildlife hospital. The center provides rehabilitation to birds, reptiles, mammals, and amphibians of all species and is run as a non-profit 501(c)(3) entity that runs solely off donations from members of the public. Marjan Ghadrdan, Director of Animal Care at AWARE, reports that animals come to them from all corners of the globe; some were abandoned or orphaned while others are taken in by volunteers from all walks of life. She notes that she frequently receives calls regarding animals in need, providing advice, guidance, and assistance.

Doing animal rescue work can be challenging and demanding work, yet its rewards can be immense. Larisa Epshteyn found great satisfaction in seeing seven raccoons and one red-shouldered hawk released back into the wild over her year working at the center. As part of its animal rehabilitation services, AWARE also finds homes for those that cannot be released into the wild again. These animals serve as ambassadors and help AWARE volunteers educate people about wildlife and human interaction. AWARE's mission is to rehabilitate injured and orphaned Georgia wildlife, promote habitat preservation and peaceful coexistence between species, educate the public about protecting our natural environment and make donations as the only source of support. With only three staff members at work at any one time and no external funding sources provided by donors AWARE relies heavily on donor contributions for its success.

Marietta National Cemetery

Marietta National Cemetery is a 23-acre historic site within Marietta's city limits that serves as the final resting place of over 17,300 men who perished during the Civil War. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it was one of the first Civil War Era National Cemeteries to be established. Henry Cole, a local merchant who supported the Union throughout the war, established this cemetery in 1866. His goal was for both Union and Confederate soldiers to be interred here so that the town could move toward peace.

Marietta was one of many towns that suffered heavy fighting during the Civil War. It was also the site of several battles, such as the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain where Union troops defended Marietta against Confederate Army attacks. Following the war, Henry Cole donated 24 acres to be used as a national cemetery. It was designed by Union Army Chaplain Thomas B. Van Horne and is considered one of the most ornate and elaborate cemeteries of its era.

There are 21 burial sections organized in crescents, circles, ovals, and shield shapes with concentric rows of graves within each one. The undulating terrain rises from the main entrance at the northwest corner to a central hill that offers breathtaking views of Kennesaw Mountain and Atlanta. Marietta National Cemetery is a must-visit when in Marietta, Georgia. It's an elegant and peaceful spot to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who served during the Civil War. As I strolled its grounds, I was profoundly moved by each gravestone's symmetry against the backdrop of rolling hills - it truly was a humbling experience.

Marietta Lyric Theatre

For over a century, Marietta Lyric Theatre was an integral part of city culture and entertainment for both locals and visitors to Marietta. Unfortunately, due to a sharp drop in attendance due to the pandemic outbreak, it closed its doors in March 2023. Three Oklahoma Governor's Arts Awards and the national Helen Hayes Award have been won by its leadership, who also tours across Oklahoma with high-caliber professional musical theater productions. As Atlanta's only professional musical theater company, it has fostered some of Atlanta's finest talent. In the 1920s and '30s, The Lyric Theatre hosted some of Broadway's top shows such as For Goodness Sake (music by Cole Porter), Fifty Million Frenchmen (music by George Gershwin), and The Cocoanuts (book by George S. Kaufman).

In its later years, the Lyric Theatre became known as Savoyards Light Opera and specialized in Gilbert and Sullivan productions; however, later productions also featured musical theatre. The Lyric Theatre was recreated from remnants of both the Apollo Theatre and the original Lyric Theatre, boasting a grand auditorium, stage house, and lobby with an arched facade on 43rd Street as well as smaller ones on 42nd Street. Tickets range in price from $25 to $60 and the theater offers kid-friendly options as well. Since its founding 42 years ago, The Lyric has been drawing in Broadway stars who have gone on to achieve great success. Unfortunately, attendance has been declining steadily for several years and there's uncertainty as to how long production will continue. Davis reports that until 2016, 60 percent or more of available seats were filled; now only half are taken.

Marietta Museum of History

The Marietta Museum of History is an excellent destination to learn more about Marietta and Cobb County's past. Housed in 1845 Kennesaw House on Depot Street, its galleries depict key moments in local history like Native Americans, the Civil War, and everyday life in the 19th century. The museum is committed to preserving local history and provides a great educational stop for visitors of all ages. They offer various tours and special events for guests to take pleasure in. One of the most significant parts of the Museum of History is their permanent collection, which houses artwork from various time periods, art movements and cultures. Additionally, there is a rotating exhibition that showcases pieces in the collection that are particularly remarkable or unique.

Open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., this museum cannot be missed! For a fun-filled shopping day in Alpharetta, North Point Mall is your go-to destination. Boasting over 100 stores such as Macy's, Sears, Target, Dillard's and JCPenney, there's something for everyone at this mall - including its iconic carousel hidden behind a floor-to-ceiling window in the food court! Not only that but it's free to visit!

Thronateeska Heritage Center is a non-profit organization established in 1974 with the mission of historic preservation and science education throughout Southwest Georgia. Situated on Heritage Plaza on West Roosevelt Avenue in Albany, GA, its campus includes four museums: History Museum, Science Museum, 40' full dome HD planetarium, Georgia Museum of Surveying & Mapping and South Georgia Archives. At Thronateeska Heritage Center in downtown, children can discover educational, cultural and entertaining activities throughout Southwest Georgia. Home to the Wetherbee Planetarium and Science Museum, this center provides children with engaging exhibits that ignite their imaginations and intrigue about South Georgia's vibrant past.

The Heritage Center, situated in downtown's historic railroad depot district, features three attractions: History Museum, Imagination Station (science discovery center) and Wetherbee Planetarium & science museum. For kids, The Imagination Station serves as an engaging learning platform with hands-on exhibits on archaeology, paleontology, space exploration, sounds & colors - plus much more!
